When Are You Entitled to Compensation for a Delayed or Cancelled Flight?

Are You Entitled to Compensation for a Delayed or Cancelled Flight?

If the service you paid for was not provided in full, you may be entitled to compensation.

This applies to air travel as well. If you purchased a ticket, it is your right to complete your journey without issues. When complications arise, you could be eligible for financial compensation, provided certain conditions are met.

Even if the airline does not explicitly inform you about it, you still have rights.

This article explains simply and clearly when you are entitled to compensation for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Was Your Flight Delayed? Here’s When You Qualify for Compensation

You are entitled to compensation if the following conditions are met:

Your flight arrived at the final destination more than 3 hours late compared to the scheduled time.

Example: If you were supposed to land in Malaga at 13:50 but landed at 17:00 due to a technical fault, you are eligible for compensation.

The delay was not caused by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline's control, such as:

  • sudden severe weather (storms, fog, strong winds),
  • natural disasters,
  • strikes by airport or air traffic control staff,
  • civil unrest or terrorist attacks.

The airline is registered in the EU (including Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) or the flight departs from an EU airport.

Was Your Flight Cancelled? Here’s When You Are Entitled to Compensation

The conditions are similar, but with one key difference:

The cancellation was not due to extraordinary circumstances.

The airline is registered in the EU or the flight departs from an EU airport.

The airline did not inform you in time:

  • If you were informed more than 14 days before departure, you are not entitled.
  • If informed 7–14 days before departure without offering an alternative flight leaving no more than 2 hours earlier, you are entitled.
  • If informed less than 7 days before departure without offering an alternative flight departing no more than 1 hour earlier, you are entitled.
